More than half of citizenship ceremonies are now held online. Follow this technical and etiquette checklist so you can focus on the oath instead of troubleshooting.
🖥️ Virtual Ceremony Tech Checklist
Complete this setup at least one day before your ceremony to avoid last-minute stress.
- Stable internet connection (minimum 5 Mbps upload and download).
- Computer or tablet with camera positioned at eye level.
- Quiet, well-lit space with the Canadian flag or neutral background.
- Printed copy of the oath and your ceremony invitation.
- Zoom or MS Teams installed and tested 24 hours before the ceremony.
🛠️ Quick Fixes for Common Issues
Audio echo or feedback
Use wired headphones or mute when not speaking. Close all other video call apps.
Video freezing or low quality
Move closer to your router, disconnect unused devices, or tether to a reliable mobile hotspot.
Waiting room delay
Stay patient. IRCC officers admit participants one by one to verify identity. Keep your microphone muted until called.
Document not visible on camera
Hold documents at chest height. If the officer cannot read them, email the requested copies immediately after the ceremony.
🎥 Camera and Audio Etiquette
Treat your virtual ceremony like a formal court appearance. IRCC officers must clearly see and hear you while confirming your identity.
- Arrive 20 minutes early, camera on, microphone muted.
- Keep family members close by but out of frame until the presiding officer invites them.
- Dress in professional or cultural attire, just as you would for an in-person ceremony.
- Do not record the ceremony unless the officer explicitly allows it.
Have children or dependants taking the oath with you? Plan how they will appear on camera and remind them to stay nearby until the officer invites everyone to stand.
📞 If You Lose Connection
IRCC provides backup instructions in your invitation. Most ceremonies allow you to rejoin the call within a few minutes. If your connection fails completely, email the citizenship officer immediately with your application number and request the next available date.
