Citizenship test retakes: three attempts and next steps
You have up to three attempts within the 30-day test period in your IRCC invitation. Here is how to prepare after an unsuccessful attempt.

After your first or second attempt
Check how many attempts remain and the deadline in your invitation. Use the time left to review the official guide and the topics you found difficult. Do not assume IRCC will send a new invitation several weeks later: the current process allows three attempts within your test period.
The format and passing score
The test contains 20 multiple-choice or true-or-false questions and lasts 45 minutes. You need at least 15 correct answers. Read each option, watch for words such as “not”, and reserve time to review before submitting.
If you fail all three attempts
IRCC will invite you to a hearing with a citizenship official. Depending on the hearing, questions may assess your knowledge, residence or language skills. An oral knowledge test has 20 questions and requires 15 correct answers. Follow the hearing invitation for instructions.
If the hearing is unsuccessful
IRCC will send its decision in a letter. If you fail the hearing, your application is refused; you must apply again and pay the fees again if you still want citizenship. A failed knowledge test alone is not a removal order. Other immigration requirements remain separate.
Prepare for your next attempt
First read the relevant Discover Canada chapter. Explain the answer in your own words, then try fresh questions. Complete a timed practice exam and review every mistake. Repeating memorized answers is less useful than understanding why each choice is correct. A high practice score cannot guarantee an official result.
Save your result
An online score is initially unofficial. IRCC reviews it before making it official. Save or email the results page using the available buttons; you cannot simply sign back in to see it later.
