Canadian citizenship test in 2026: format, time and preparation
The current test has 20 questions, a 45-minute time limit and a passing score of 15 out of 20. This guide explains what to study and how to prepare.

Who needs to take it
Applicants aged 18 to 54 when they sign their application generally must meet the citizenship knowledge requirement. Age is assessed at application, not simply on test day. Language ability is a separate requirement. Consult IRCC if you need an accommodation or waiver.
Questions and language
Questions can be multiple choice or true or false. You can take the test in English or French. The source is Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. Study history, geography, government, symbols, elections, rights and responsibilities. Do not rely on an assumed quota of questions from each chapter.
Your invitation
Read the invitation for the dates, format and instructions that apply to you. You normally have 30 days and up to three attempts. If your online invitation shows a different period, follow IRCC’s instructions for contacting them. A practice website cannot schedule the official test.
Taking the online test
Prepare the device, browser, identity document and testing space specified by IRCC. Complete the identity checks before starting. Once the test begins, watch the 45-minute timer: the system submits your selected answers when time expires. Follow the rules on assistance and reference materials.
Interpreting your score
Fifteen correct answers out of 20 is a pass. The initial online result is unofficial until IRCC reviews it. Passing the knowledge test does not by itself grant citizenship; the remaining requirements and ceremony still matter.
A practical study routine
Read one section of Discover Canada, close the guide and explain the main facts aloud. Try practice questions, then look up every error. When you have covered the guide, take a fresh 20-question timed exam. Review weak topics instead of only repeating familiar questions.
